The short answer. Phinda is a Big Five reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, known for cheetah and for its rare sand forest. It is close enough to the coast to add a few days on the beach, and it has 5 very different lodges. It is a low-risk, seasonal malaria area.
What makes it different
Phinda packs several habitats into one reserve: dry sand forest, wetland, grassland and bushveld, with the Ubombo mountains on the horizon. That variety brings a wide range of animals and birds, and Phinda is well known for cheetah and for its conservation work with rhino.
Its lodges are all run by the same company but feel nothing alike, from glass suites in the forest to a cliffside lodge and a private lodge booked as a whole.
Which Phinda lodge?
Couples wanting drama: Rock. Couples wanting quiet: Vlei. Nature lovers: Forest. Families with young children: Mountain. A family or group wanting the place to themselves: Zuka. We compare all 5 in Phinda's 5 lodges compared.
Getting there
By road it is about 6.5 hours from Johannesburg, and Durban families can drive up via the N2 for a long weekend. Scheduled flights go to Richards Bay, about 2 hours from the reserve by road, and there are flights to Phinda's own airstrip.
When to go
From May to October it is dry, mild and good for game viewing, with the thinnest bush. Summer is hot and humid, with lush green bush, young animals and excellent birding. Pair it with the coast in any season.
