Phinda Rock: the one with the view
Its 6 suites are built into a cliff face above the valley, each with its own plunge pool and deck. It is the most dramatic setting of the 5, and with a minimum age of 12 it stays grown-up.
Phinda Vlei: the quiet one
Also just 6 suites, set between sand forest and a wetland. Every suite has a plunge pool and a shaded sala looking over the vlei, and the interiors nod to old KwaZulu-Natal homesteads. Children must be 12 or older.
Phinda Forest: the one in the trees
Glass-walled suites stand on stilts in rare sand forest, so nyala and duiker wander past your deck. Children 6 and over join shared game drives; walking safaris start at 12.
Phinda Mountain: the family one
A hilltop lodge looking across to the Ubombo mountains, with family suites and cottages and a children's programme. All ages are welcome, though children under 6 need a private vehicle for game drives.
Phinda Zuka: the one you have to yourselves
Just 4 suites around a seasonal waterhole beneath the Zuka Hills, booked as a whole for one family or group. The family suite has a separate children's bedroom.
Good to know for all 5
- Phinda is in a low-risk malaria area. Speak to your doctor, and pack repellent from October to May.
- The reserve has its own airstrip, with scheduled flights from Johannesburg. You can also drive via the N2.
- Conservation fees are extra unless stated.
