The short answer. Come to the Sabi Sand for leopard and for close, unhurried sightings. It is a malaria area, it is about 6 hours by road from Joburg, and it has the widest spread of lodges in the Greater Kruger, from family favourites to places where the minimum age is 12.
What makes it different
The Sabi Sand is a group of privately owned properties on the western border of the Kruger, with no fences between them and the national park, so animals move freely across. The Sabie and Sand rivers run through it and give it its name.
It is best known for leopard. Generations of leopard here have grown up around game vehicles, which is why sightings are often long and relaxed. Guides can leave the road to follow an animal, within each property's rules, and the number of vehicles at a sighting is limited, so it rarely feels crowded.
Who it suits
- First safaris. The chance of seeing the Big Five in a short stay is very good.
- Photographers. Off-road tracking and patient guiding make for close, clean sightings.
- Couples. Several lodges take children from 12 only, so the mood stays grown-up.
- Families. Others welcome children from 6 or 8, and a few are private villas you book as a whole.
Getting there
By road it is about 6 hours from Johannesburg, and the last stretch is on gravel inside the reserve. Most people fly: there are scheduled flights to Skukuza and to Kruger Mpumalanga International, and many lodges have their own airstrip for light aircraft. Tell us where you are coming from and we will work out the easiest way in.
When to go
From May to September the bush is dry and thin, animals gather at water, and days are warm with cold early mornings. It is the classic game viewing season. From November to March it is green, hot and full of young animals and migrant birds, with afternoon storms. Resident specials often run through the quieter months, so this is when the best rates tend to appear.
Good to know
- It is a malaria area. Speak to your doctor before you travel.
- Reserve entry and conservation fees are usually extra unless the special says otherwise.
- Children's ages vary a great deal from lodge to lodge. Each live rate on this page shows the age limit.
