The short answer. Stay at a private lodge inside the Kruger for the park's size and variety, with your lodge's own guides and vehicles. The south is closest to Joburg and busiest with wildlife; the far north is remote and quiet. It is a malaria area, and Kruger conservation fees are charged per person per day.
What makes it different
The Kruger covers nearly 2 million hectares, and most visitors see it from its public roads and SANParks accommodation. The lodges on this page are different. They sit on private concessions inside the park, areas where only that lodge's guests drive, so you get the Kruger's scale with far fewer vehicles, plus night drives and bush walks that self-drivers can't do.
The park changes a great deal from south to north. The south, around the Sabie and Crocodile rivers, has the thickest wildlife and the shortest drive from Joburg. The centre is open grassland, good for lion and cheetah. The far north around Pafuri, where the Luvuvhu meets the Limpopo, is wild, green and remote, and loved by birders.
Who it suits
- People who want the real Kruger without joining the queue at a sighting.
- Families. Several lodges take children of all ages or from 6.
- Walkers. A few lodges here specialise in walking safaris, with a minimum age of 12.
- Something different. Kruger Shalati puts you in a train carriage on a bridge over the Sabie River.
Getting there
By road the southern concessions are about 5 to 6 hours from Johannesburg; the far north is a full day's drive or a charter flight. Scheduled flights land at Skukuza, Kruger Mpumalanga International and Hoedspruit. Each rate on this page shows the drive time and the nearest airport for that lodge.
When to go
May to September is dry and cooler, the bush thins out and animals stay close to water. November to March is green, hot and wet, with newborn impala in early summer and the best birding of the year. Rates are often lowest in the quieter months, which is when most resident specials appear.
Good to know
- Kruger conservation fees are charged per person per day, paid at the gate or at the lodge. A SANParks Wild Card covers them.
- Park gates open and close at set times, so plan to arrive well before the gate closes.
- It is a malaria area. Speak to your doctor before you travel.
