The short answer. Kapama is the Big Five reserve closest to Hoedspruit airport, so you can land and be on a game drive the same afternoon. It has lodges for every kind of trip, from big family lodges to small, grown-up hideaways. It is a malaria area.
What makes it different
Kapama is a large private reserve just outside Hoedspruit, in our own backyard. Its biggest selling point is how easy it is: the airport is minutes away and the lodges are well set up for short stays.
The lodges differ a lot. Kapama River Lodge is the big, sociable one, good for families. Karula and Southern Camp are smaller and quieter. Jabulani is known for its elephant herd and welcomes children of all ages.
Who it suits
- Short breaks. Fly in, drive the same day, fly home after breakfast.
- Families. Several lodges welcome children.
- Couples. Smaller lodges with a quieter feel.
Getting there
By road Kapama is about 6 hours from Johannesburg. Scheduled flights land at Hoedspruit, and the lodges are a short transfer from the airport. We live in Hoedspruit, so Kapama really is on our doorstep.
When to go
May to September is dry and cooler, with easy game viewing. November to March is hot, green and full of young animals, with afternoon storms. Rates are usually at their best in the quieter months.
Good to know
- It is a malaria area. Speak to your doctor before you travel.
- Check what each special includes. Drinks are included at some Kapama lodges and extra at others.
- Kapama is fenced and sits outside the open Greater Kruger system. It has the Big Five all the same.
