What a South African resident rate includes, and what it doesn't

The number on the card is only half the story. Here is how to read a resident rate, so the bill at the end matches the one in your head.

What "pppns" means

Per person, per night, sharing. A rate of R6,000 pppns for 2 people for 3 nights is R36,000 in total.

Some specials are priced for the whole villa or lodge instead. On our site those say "per night, whole villa", so you are never left guessing which is which.

Who qualifies

Resident rates are for South African residents. Lodges usually ask to see proof, normally your ID, at check-in, so keep it with you.

What is usually included at a game lodge

  • All meals
  • Your room or suite
  • 2 game activities a day, usually morning and afternoon drives
  • Drinks only when the special says so; many lodges charge for them separately

Hotel and coastal specials more often include breakfast only. Every special on our site lists exactly what is included.

What is usually extra

  • Conservation, park and community fees. In the Kruger, for example, conservation fees are paid per person at the gate.
  • Drinks, unless the special lists them as included
  • Flights and road transfers
  • Spa treatments
  • Gratuities for your guide, tracker and lodge team

How we work out the saving

We compare the resident rate with the lodge's standard rate for the same room and dates. If a lodge doesn't publish a standard rate, we show no saving rather than guess one.

Our rate promise

We never change the price you pay. Every rate on our site is the lodge's own South African resident rate, exactly as the lodge gives it to us, with no inflated "usual" prices and no games.

Ready to look? Every live rate is on our specials page, and you can filter by reserve, budget or a long weekend.

Questions we are asked

Do children pay the same rate?

It depends on the lodge. Children's rates and age limits vary, so send us their ages and we will check.

What if I travel alone?

Many lodges add a single supplement. We will find the ones that don't charge much.

Are conservation fees included in the rate?

Usually not. Unless the special says otherwise, budget for them on top, paid at the gate or the lodge.

If a rate looks too good to be true, ask us what's in it. We will tell you straight.
