The short answer. Karongwe is a smaller private reserve in the Lowveld, and it is where you often find the best value. Most of its lodges welcome children, it is about an hour from Hoedspruit airport, and it is a malaria area.
What makes it different
Karongwe is a private, fenced reserve west of the Kruger, with rivers and riverine forest running through it. Because it is compact, game drives cover the whole reserve easily, and sightings of lion, elephant and rhino are frequent.
Its lodges are mostly small and relaxed, with a strong focus on families. Rates here are often well below those of the bigger names in the Greater Kruger, for a similar safari experience.
Who it suits
- Families. Most lodges welcome children.
- Budget-minded first safaris. Lion, leopard, elephant and rhino at some of the best rates in the Lowveld.
- Couples. Kuname Lodge takes guests from 12.
Getting there
By road Karongwe is about 6 hours from Johannesburg. Scheduled flights land at Hoedspruit, and your lodge can arrange a transfer. We live in Hoedspruit and can help with the road in.
When to go
May to September is dry, with cooler days and easy game viewing. November to March is hot and green, with young animals and afternoon storms. Resident rates are often at their best in the quieter months.
Good to know
- It is a malaria area. Speak to your doctor before you travel.
- Reserve levies are usually extra unless the special says otherwise.
- Because the reserve is fenced and compact, wildlife stays within reach of every lodge.
