# 2 nights or 3? Making a short Kruger escape count

**The short answer.** Driving? Book 3 nights. Flying into Hoedspruit or Skukuza? 2 nights can work well.

## What 2 nights really looks like

Take Imbali Safari Lodge in the Kruger as an example. Check-in is at 13:00, so you arrive for lunch and high tea, then head out on the afternoon drive. The next day has a morning and an afternoon drive. On your last morning there is 1 more drive, then breakfast and check-out at 11:00.

That is 4 game drives. Add a third night and you have 6, plus a whole day with nowhere to be.

## What the third night adds

The drive is the same either way, so the third night is where the trip starts to pay back. You get a slow middle day, time for the pool or a bush walk, and 2 more chances at the sighting you came for. Leopard and wild dog do not work to a timetable.

## What it costs

At Imbali's resident rate of R6,479 pppns, 2 nights for 2 people comes to R25,916 and 3 nights to R38,874\. The third night adds R12,958 for the 2 of you, for 50% more time on drives and no extra hours in the car. In the Kruger itself, conservation fees are charged per person per day (R137 for South African residents until 31 October 2026, and free with a Wild Card), so budget for 1 more day of those too. Rates are correct on 30 September 2026.

## Specials that make 3 nights the obvious choice

Some lodges only give their best resident rate if you stay 3 nights. If you were planning 2 nights, the third may cost less than you think.

## When 2 nights is plenty

- You are flying in, so the travel eats hours, not days.
- You are splitting a longer trip between 2 lodges.
- You are going somewhere close to home, like the Waterberg or Pilanesberg.

## Questions we are asked

### Is 2 nights enough for a safari?

If you fly in, it can be. If you are driving from Joburg, 3 nights gives you 6 drives for the same time on the road.

### How many game drives do you get per day?

Most lodges run 2, one early morning and one late afternoon.

### Do drive times change with the season?

Yes. At Imbali, summer drives leave at around 05:00 and 17:00, and winter drives at 06:00 and 16:00.
